mission of World of Women Immigrants is to help Jewish émigré women from
the Central Asia adjust to their new lives in America. Currently, the organization generally focuses on people of
Bukharian and Central Asian background, but hopes to gain enough resources
to expand and offer aid to all Jewish immigrants.
Immigration from Central Asia to the United States is particularly
difficult because of the striking differences in culture, attitudes, and
general ways of life. The
traditional society from which Bukharian Jews originate differs greatly
from the western culture. Though
coming to America has brought physical security from Soviet anti-Semitism
and Moslem extremists, it has also caused upheaval to the Bukharian family
lifestyle. Women in
particular are affected by these changes, often negatively.
The World of Women Immigrants offers programs to mitigate problems
and other support. In
particular, this organization targets Bukharian women who suffer from
domestic abuse as well as their families to learn about American society,
their rights and the role of women. |
